Routine. Routine. Routine. Yes, You Need One!

Writer: Monica WildMonica Wild

Hello, amazing puppy parents! Ready to dive into the secret sauce that makes raising a puppy slightly less crazy? It’s not a magic potion, but it's just as powerful—routine! Yes, I’m going to say it again, routine! Now, let's make this fun because, let’s face it, the word ‘routine’ doesn’t exactly scream excitement. But trust me, by the end of this blog, you’ll be chanting it in your sleep.

Why All the Fuss About Routine?

Imagine living in a world where you never know when you’re going to eat, sleep, or what you're supposed to be doing at any given moment. Sounds stressful, right? Well, that’s what life without a routine feels like to your puppy. Establishing a predictable schedule isn’t just about training—it’s about creating a calming blueprint for your pup’s day-to-day life.

The Magic of a Puppy Schedule

Setting up a daily routine helps your puppy understand the basic expectations of their new world. When do we eat? Morning and evening. When do we play? A few times a day. When do we practice sitting and not chewing the couch legs? In between the eating and the playing. See, it’s not so hard!

Accountability: Everyone Has a Role

Here’s where it gets even more fun. Establishing a routine isn’t just on your puppy; it’s on you and every human in your household. Yes, that means assigning roles. Someone is the Feeder, someone is the Walker, and someone is the Playtime Coordinator. And no, the dog cannot be the Feeder, even though they’d volunteer in a heartbeat.

Keep It Light, Keep It Tight

While the routine should be consistent, it doesn’t have to be military strict. Got stuck in traffic and dinner is half an hour late? Your puppy will survive. The idea is to have a framework that everyone, pup included, generally follows. This reduces anxiety for your puppy because they know what to expect, and when to expect it.

Why Your Puppy Will Thank You

With a solid routine, you’ll notice fewer accidents in the house, less destructive behavior, and a generally happier puppy. They might not send you a thank you card, but those extra tail wags and puppy kisses are your puppy’s way of saying, “Thanks for making life understandable!”

Coming Up Next: The How-To of Crate Training

Now that we’ve got our routine down, what’s next? Stay tuned for our next blog where we dive into the world of crate training. Think of it as your puppy’s personal room that they never have to clean. How cool is that?

And remember, routine might sound boring, but in the puppy world, it’s the jazz hands of daily life. So, embrace it, have fun with it, and watch as your puppy grows into a well-adjusted, happy dog. Let’s keep those tails wagging in anticipation, not confusion!
